Get the Hair Your Want
Most Coveted Locks: Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston’s long, shiny strands top many wish lists. “She wears a straight but full, long-layered look,” says her hairstylist, Chris McMillan, which works best if you have thick, healthy hair. McMillan applies Kérastase Paris Mousse Nutri-Sculpt ($29) at her crown for height and uses Serum Oléo-Relax ($34) on the ends. The key to Aniston’s perfect blowout? “A round brush because it creates tension, which smooths hair out nicely.” Once it is dry, he bends and tucks her front pieces behind her ears, “to keep it open and a bit worn in.”
Long, Layered Locks: Sarah Jessica Parker
This look is incredibly versatile and feminine and can be flattering at every age, which is why so many Hollywood leading ladies choose it.
Get the Cut: If your hair is fine, add long, blended layers and keep the length above your breast line to maintain volume and body. For hair that is thick and curly, go the Sarah Jessica Parker route and “ask for face-framing layers that start at your collarbone and long, simple ones throughout,” advises stylist Adir Abergel of Frédéric Fekkai. If your face is heart shaped, wearing bangs can really open it up. “Cut them straight across, not angled,” says Abergel.
Style Tips for Longer Hair: Kate Winslet
“For polished curls like Kate Winslet’s, use products that enhance them, like Tigi Curls Rock shampoo [$11.50] and conditioner [$14.50],” says Lati Domi, artistic director of Toni & Guy/Tigi. Smooth frizz with Kim Vo Dry Serum ($55) and let your hair dry as much as possible before blow-drying to prevent heat damage. Take a 1 1/4-inch curling iron like T3 Pro EverTwirl ($89) and wrap sections around the outside of the barrel to avoid creating a bend. For a beachier effect, spritz KMS California Sea Salt Spray ($15.95) into your hand and scrunch it in.
Style Tips: Sleek & Straight. Use Tresemmé Thermal Creations Straightening Gel ($4.99) on damp hair and dry it with a round brush. Smooth out kinks with an FHI Do More styling iron ($120).
“For natural-looking highlights, have your stylist use the balliage technique,” instructs Vo, referring to a method of hand painting sections of your hair. “This looks great when hair grows out a bit, so you can really go a few weeks longer between visits to your colorist.”
Enhance your natural color. “Brunettes [like Kerry Washington, pictured with perfect shade] should add richness to their color,” says Vo, who suggests using a gloss. At home, try John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze ($9.99). If you have blonde hair, “bump up the color one shade for a beachy look, like Kate Hudson’s,” he notes. “And for reds, I use golden highlights to soften the color.”
Protect your color from damage. “The ends of your hair have been around for a few years,” explains Rona O’Connor, Blake Lively’s colorist and owner of the Lukaro Salon in Beverly Hills. “Treat hair once a week with a deep conditioner.” Try Paul Mitchell Super Strong Treatment ($15.99) or Nexxus Emergencée ($15). “And block hair from sun exposure by twisting it into a bun.”
Get the Cut: Hair should be one length (at the collarbone), with slight layering on the ends, like Anne Hathaway’s.
Style Tips: Apply Dove Body & Lift Volumizing Mousse ($3.49) and blow-dry using your hands to bring out hair’s natural texture.
Get the Cut: Create Ellen Barkin’s elegant shape by “asking for long layers around the face so your ends are solid, not choppy,” instructs Domi. “Keep the length an inch below your chin.”
Style Tips: For soft, smooth locks, start with L’Oréal Paris Professionnel Texture Expert Shine Perfection ($20). If you have bangs, “brush them back at an angle when blow-drying to create a strong sweep,” says Adir Abergel. Finish with a round brush, pulling it underneath your hair.
Get the Cut: “Victoria Beckham’s top is a bit longer, but the shape is simple with graduated layers,” says Domi. Abergel adds, “Keep bangs choppy so they can move in any direction.”
Style Tips: Use a gel like Bumble and Bumble Bb. Gel ($24) when hair is damp to give your style support. Tousle hair as it dries and add shape with Pantene Pro-V Texturize! Sculpting Wax ($4.49).
If you have a pixie cut (like Katie Holmes), don’t use foils when highlighting your hair. “They’ll fall out and your color will show up as stripes,” warns O’Connor. Instead, she uses a mascara brush, which gives a colorist more control when painting in color.
Try a solid brunette only if you have shoulder-length hair. “When your style is simple and straight, the color needs to be rich and shiny,” advises O’Connor. For glossy locks, use Clairol Natural Instincts Shine Happy treatment ($8.99). But if you wear your hair wavy, “try fine highlights — go one shade lighter — which catch light and add dimension to curls.”
Go bright if you’re going blonde. “An in-between blonde looks mousy,” claims Vo. “A lighter color will add personality and can make you look younger.”
If you’re a redhead, stick with a subtle shade or go a little on the brown side. “A flaming red is too powerful,” notes Vo. When you tone it down, the color appears soft, natural, and feminine.
